How AI benefits chemistry students and teachers

Chemistry is often challenging for both students and teachers. Use AI for chemistry help to enhance learning outcomes, create teaching resources, and illustrate abstract ideas.

Prepare your class with chemistry AI resources

Create teaching resources with generative AI tools. AI outlines lesson plans, explains key concepts, and provides resources for homework and in-classroom assignments. Prepare for your next class with AI to save time on prep work and brainstorm hands-on activities that illustrate important chemistry concepts.

For example, ask AI to “create a detailed chemistry lesson plan on acids and bases, including an engaging class activity,” and it might suggest an experiment that involves testing the pH of common classroom items. Use these prompts, or create your own, to generate classroom activities with AI:

  • Explain Avogadro’s number in three different ways: a beginner explanation, an analogy, and an advanced definition.
  • Generate a practice test on stoichiometry with 10 multiple-choice questions and answer explanations.

Translate complex chemistry topics for students

AI supports students who need additional chemistry help. If students face difficult homework questions after school hours, AI provides tutoring and additional assistance to solidify their knowledge.

For example, if students ask AI to “explain redox reactions to a high schooler,” it will translate an abstract chemistry concept like redox reactions into tangible information. By engaging further with their AI tool and asking follow-up questions, students deepen their understanding of a topic and fill in gaps in their knowledge. Encourage students to try these prompts or make their own:

  • Summarize the steps of the carbon cycle in simple terms.
  • Elaborate on the reactivity series of metals in layman’s terms.

Study for chemistry exams with AI

AI creates learning tools for chemistry students to solidify their memory and test their knowledge. In addition to explaining complex topics, AI acts as a study buddy by generating practice tests and quizzes to assist students preparing for exams.

For example, ask AI to “create a ten-question sample quiz about chemical bonds,” and it will generate a relevant quiz, complete with explanations for missed questions and a summary of the student’s performance. If students need to enhance their memory, AI creates flashcards, mnemonic devices, and visual tools to assist with the memorization process. Try these sample prompts to get started:

  • Create flashcards to help me memorize the periodic table.
  • Generate a practice exam about the properties of substances.
“If students face difficult homework questions after school hours, AI provides tutoring and additional assistance to solidify their knowledge.”

Bring chemistry concepts to life with images

Chemistry teachers frequently need to explain reactions that only occur at the molecular level. Using image-generating AI technology allows teachers to create visuals of cell structures, molecular orbitals, or crystal lattices based on simple prompts.

This makes abstract ideas more accessible and enhances learning outcomes for the visual learners in your class. To try it yourself, ask your AI tool to:

  • Generate a visual of a benzene molecule showing its resonance structures.
  • Create an image of a carbon atom bonded to four hydrogen atoms.

Whether you’re a student or a teacher, AI tools open new possibilities for learning about chemistry. Try using AI in your classroom today to meet your students’ needs and encourage responsible AI use.
